Pirelli unveils two new tires for Porsche TAYCAN
Milan, April 10, 2024. Porsche has chosen Pirelli P Zero R and P Zero Trofeo RS to fit in the new Taycan, and these two tires will be the only choice of tires for the Taycan Turbo GT, the most sporty model in the range. The first tyre is designed for everyday driving in supercars, while the second tyre is a semi-hot melt tyre for street use. Both tyres were launched earlier this year and have been specially tweaked in cooperation with Porsche to enhance the vehicle’s sporty performance and energy efficiency. Both tyres have the ELECT ? logo on the sidewall, indicating that they have a range of technical solutions developed specifically for pure electric and plug-in hybrid models to adapt to the characteristics of electric vehicles. The ELECT tire technology ? debuted in 2019 on the first-generation Porsche Taycan. Today, Porsche’s product range includes more than 30 original Pirelli tyres with ELECT ?, designed to match the electrification of different models, such as the Macan.

The original P Zero R tyre of the Porsche Taycan is designed to enhance the dynamic quality and driving pleasure of the vehicle, and is designed for everyday driving, but also for more sporty driving outside. This goal was achieved thanks to Pirelli’s experience as a supplier of the highest-performance models and the development of the ELECT ?, a technology for electric tires that helps to highlight improvements compared to the previous generation, such as comfort and battery range. The double carcass makes the tyre structure very strong and able to withstand the weight exerted by the vehicle, especially the aerodynamic load on the rear and the weight of the battery. This way, the vehicle remains stable even at high speeds. In order to manage the sudden acceleration typical of electric motors, in addition to strengthening the tyre structure, Pirelli’s patented resin blending technology also realizes the function of a multi-composite tread. The various formulations within the tread work together to provide grip over a wide range of temperatures and road conditions, resulting in high performance even in wet road conditions. The tread pattern is designed to minimize noise while reducing rolling resistance through a combination of the composite formula and tread pattern, thus achieving the energy savings demanded by Porsche.

The P Zero Trofeo RS was born at the Nurburgring
The P Zero Trofeo RS is the most sporty tyre Pirelli has offered for the new Porsche Taycan, suitable for both road driving and track performance. In fact, it is the top-of-the-line high-performance tyre in the Pirelli road range, made with semi-hot-melt tyres derived from formulations specifically designed for rally products. The P Zero Trofeo RS, developed exclusively for the new Taycan, enables the vehicle to reach its maximum potential on the track, thus providing high performance, corner grip and stability on dry surfaces, and maintaining the stability of performance for a long time. Pirelli and Porsche have invested a great deal of effort in the joint development of the tyre. Testing with Porsche’s Driving Dynamics engineer and R & D driver Lars Kern on the Nürburgring was crucial to achieving excellent driving performance and maximum performance, where the electric sports car reached speeds of over 300 km/h. A range of construction solutions were employed to optimise the tire’s ground plane at high speeds: a dedicated formula provides grip and stability, with fewer grooves on the outside shoulder of the tread to provide support in the event of greater lateral acceleration; a patterned design ensures that the entire ground plane is heated quickly and evenly. As a result, this tire does not require a warm tire blanket, even on the most demanding tracks. To make the development process faster and more efficient, Pirelli’s virtual design tool compares a large number of tire models and tread models in a digital environment to define the tire’s characteristics and performance in detail.

The P Zero R and P Zero Trofeo RS developed for this model are 265/35ZR21 and 305/30ZR21, respectively. To complement the range of tyre options available for the Porsche Taycan, Pirelli has over the years developed the P Zero, P7 All Season, P7 Blue and P Zero Winter, with sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches.
